3/4/26 Wildfire Resilience Code Amendments Scheduled For City Council Work Session Wednesday, March 11, 2026
Alamosa, CO – The State of Colorado, through Senate Bill 23-166, has required that all jurisdictions adopt the 2025 Colorado Wildfire Resiliency Code (CWRC) by April 1, 2026. The CWRC only affects new construction in wildfire risk areas. The code applies to both structures and landscape. There are three primary reasons the state is mandating the adoption of the CWRC. Firstly, to mitigate the risk of wildfires that threaten lives and structures. Secondly, to ensure there are consistent regulations in every community in Colorado. Thirdly, to minimize the cost of rebuilding in the event of wildfire and prevent insurance carriers from reducing or removing coverage in Colorado communities.
Although CWRC adoption is mandated by the state, Alamosa City Council is discussing how the related potential code changes will affect new construction, exterior renovations over 25% surface area, additions over 500 sq. ft., and landscaping. In addition, they will be discussing adopting the state’s 2025 Colorado Wildfire Resiliency Code Map and whether to expand the area within city limits subject to the new regulations.
The work session will be held in Council Chambers at City Hall, 300 Hunt Avenue, at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 11, 2026. There will be a 3 minute public comment period at the end of the work session. The City highly encourages anyone who has an opinion or questions on this topic to attend this public meeting either in person or via Zoom using the following information: Webinar Link: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/86442667578 or Dial-In Number: +1 719 359 4580 US | Webinar ID: 864 4266 7578.
In order to meet the State-mandated requirement of having the Code adopted by April 1st, City Council will vote on the item at their regularly scheduled meetings on March 18th for first reading and April 1st for second reading. Both meetings will allow time for public comment.
