3/11/26 Spring Fire Safety Guidelines & Responsible Burning Practices
Alamosa, CO - With spring quickly approaching and unusually dry conditions following a winter of low precipitation, it is vital to take proactive steps to reduce the risk of catastrophic wildfires and property loss.
Responsible burning is essential for community safety. Never burn during high winds or Red Flag Warnings - an alert issued by the National Weather Service when strong winds, low humidity, and dry vegetation create critical fire conditions. During these times, fires can ignite easily and spread rapidly.
- Open burning within city limits is prohibited.
-
If you are in county limits, remember the following guidelines:
- Plan your burn in advance and check local weather conditions at weather.gov/pub
- Maintain at least 50 feet of clearance from all structures.
- Keep the fire small and manageable.
- Ensure an adult is present at all times with water and a shovel ready.
- Before ignition, call Colorado State Patrol Dispatch at 719-589-5807 to notify them of your controlled burn.
- Make sure the fire is completely extinguished before leaving the area.
- If the fire begins to get out of control, call 911 immediately.
For questions, contact the Alamosa Fire Department at 719-587-2530.
